For example, the border between its Eastern and Central time zones ran through Detroit, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Charleston. The borders of its time zones ran through railroad stations, often in major cities. Allen, the editor of the Traveler's Official Railway Guide. and Canadian railroads implemented a version proposed by William F. Dowd's system was never accepted by North American railroads. In 1870 he proposed four ideal time zones having north–south borders, the first centered on Washington, D.C., but by 1872 the first was centered on meridian 75° west of Greenwich, with natural borders such as sections of the Appalachian Mountains. Dowd proposed a system of hourly standard time zones for North American railroads around 1863, although he published nothing on the matter at that time and did not consult railroad officials until 1869. ![]() ġ913 time zone map of the United States, showing boundaries very different from todayĬharles F. Some junctions served by several railroads had a clock for each railroad, each showing a different time. Each railroad used its own standard time, usually based on the local time of its headquarters or most important terminus, and the railroad's train schedules were published using its own time. Timekeeping on North American railroads in the 19th century was complex. This standard was known as New Zealand Mean Time. It was based on longitude 172☃0′ east of Greenwich, that is 11 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT. On November 2, 1868, the then British Colony of New Zealand officially adopted a standard time to be observed throughout the colony. Some British clocks from this period have two minute hands, one for the local time and one for GMT. By 1855, 98% of Great Britain's public clocks were using GMT, but it was not made the island's legal time until August 2, 1880. This practice was soon followed by other railway companies in Great Britain and became known as Railway Time.Īround August 23, 1852, time signals were first transmitted by telegraph from the Royal Observatory. In November 1840, the Great Western Railway started using GMT kept by portable chronometers. In the 19th century, as transportation and telecommunications improved, it became increasingly inconvenient for each location to observe its own solar time. To convert to PDT I’d add 12 to get 1320, then subtract 10 to get 0320 and add 3 to get 06:20 PM.The control panel of the Time Zone Clock in front of Coventry Transport Museum I’d do the second example the same way, 0200Z is 26 -10 = 16 + 2 = 18 or 6 PM.As I write this it is 0120Z. So in the winter in California I’d convert 2300Z by subtracting 10 and adding 2: 23-10 = 13 + 2 = 15 or 3 PM. It is easier for me to subtract 10 and then add 3, 2, or 1. So in this case add 12 plus 2 to get 14 and then subtract 5 to get 9 PM.Īlso, for me, subtracting 7, 8, 9 is a bit difficult to do. I usually find that it is easier to add 12 first, then subtract. Then you need to subtract 3 from 12 to get 9 PM. It gets a little more complicated if the time is 0200Z. For example, if the time is 2300Z and daylight saving time is not in effect, the time in New York (Eastern Time Zone) is 2300 - 500 = 1800 or 6 PM. First, subtract the appropriate offset from UTC and then covert to AM or PM. The conversion from UTC to local is a two step process. They need to be able to convert UTC time to local time and vice versa. Pilots often fly across multiple time zones in a single day and to avoid confusion use UTC time for filing flight plans, accessing weather, and calculating time en route. ![]() In 1928 Coordinated Universal Time (abbreviated UTC) was introduced by the International Astronomical Union to more precisely measure time. The time zone at Greenwich was assigned the letter Z and so GMT is often referred to as Zulu time and shown with the letter Z. Since 1884 the time in Greenwich was used as a standard and referred to as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Pilots and astronomers are two professions that use a standard time based on the time in Greenwich England, the home of the Royal Observatory and the prime meridian. The current time is: 12:20:47 or 12:20:47 pm in New York. The current time is: 09:20:47 or 09:20:47 am in California. ![]()
